The Tuesday Club has raised its annual dues from 300 to 400 DKK at their general meeting! \u2013 but this only applies to 2023, as they are celebrating their 75th anniversary, which requires a little more capital. The Old Boys Club can celebrate their 45th anniversary in September 2023 \u2013 an anniversary that we have chosen not to mark. We will wait another 5 years to celebrate ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the chairman has decided that it will not be PGA Catalunya that we will visit on next year's golf trip - and this is solely due to the price! The trip would have cost the same as to Ireland this year, but a single room alone cost 3,000 DKK extra - so I have looked around for other options and my contact at the travel agency has highly recommended Emporda Golf Club also in the Costa Brava area, so that is what we are going with this time, even though the price for a single room is on the expensive end, it is offset by the fact that the hotel offers both breakfast and dinner every day. It feels like a short time ago that the rules of golf underwent a comprehensive revision with a completely new system. But that was as of January 1, 2019, so we have already played four seasons with the \u201cnew\u201d rules, and that means that the R&A and USGA have again reviewed the rules and introduced some adjustments, as they always do every four years. The changes come into effect on January 1, 2023. These are not sweeping changes to the entire rule set like four years ago, but there are still several things that we as ordinary golfers should be aware of, and which should therefore be mentioned here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Drop on flag line<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Most golfers will occasionally have to drop behind the flagstick, either because the ball has been knocked into a penalty area or because the ball has been declared unplayable. As it stands, Rule 19.2b requires the player to select a reference point on the flagstick and from there has a club-length relief area no nearer the hole where the ball may be dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Effective January 1, the procedure for taking relief from the flag line has been adjusted so that the player must now drop on the line itself, and the point where the ball first hits the ground creates a relief area of one club-length in any direction from there. That is, the ball must come to rest within one club-length of the point on the flag line where the ball is dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, there is a limitation to the relief area that the ball may not come closer to the hole than its original position, for example, in the case of a drop for an unplayable ball, where you only go back on the line very briefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moved by forces of nature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Another adjustment to the rules is in Rule 9.3 regarding \u201cball moved by natural forces after relief taken\u201d. A new exception to this rule means that a ball must be replaced if relief has been taken and the ball is then moved by natural forces to another area of the course, such as a penalty area or bunker. This also applies if it ends up out of bounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For example, you may have taken relief in the general area on a slope close to a penalty area. As you prepare to make your stroke, a gust of wind blows your ball into the penalty area, such as a lake. Since the penalty area is a different area of the course from where your ball lay, the ball (or another ball) must simply be replaced without penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This change came after some incidents on the PGA Tour that seemed unfair to the players. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Ball hits you<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Rule 11.1b(2) regarding ball in motion accidentally hitting player has been amended with some additions so that a stroke from the putting green no longer has to be cancelled and replayed if it hits the player himself or the club used to make the stroke \u2013 or an insect (exactly an animal, which is also defined as loose natural objects). <\/p>\n\n\n\n An example: You are standing close to the hole and putt. The putt takes the edge and goes all the way around in a horseshoe and hits your shoe or putter. For most people, the natural reaction is to just hit the ball in. Fortunately, you are allowed to do that under the new rules, where before you had to replay the shot \u2013 and got two penalty strokes for not doing so!<\/p>\n\n\n\n This means that shots from the green have been equated with shots from all other areas on the course, where there is no penalty if the ball hits yourself or your equipment after a shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Damaged club<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Many players have experienced a golf club being damaged during play, for example, by the shaft breaking during a stroke. Previously, it was not permitted to replace the club during play, but Rule 4.1a(2) has been amended to allow a player to replace a damaged club provided that it is not damaged as a result of abuse, such as a player who slams the club into the ground in anger over a botched shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition, it is probably not practical to change the club during the game, which will probably limit the practical application of the new rule. But perhaps in some cases it would be possible to rush into the clubhouse and get a new club when passing the clubhouse after the 9th hole?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rule 10.2b adds that no object may be placed anywhere on the course to assist in indicating the line of play or other direction. The player cannot avoid penalty even if the object is removed before the stroke is made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This means that when you are going to make a blind shot over a hilltop, you may go ahead and orient yourself before the shot, and another person may also show you the direction, but you may not place your bag or anything else on the hilltop to help you with the direction. The old joke about \u201caiming for the third cloud from the right\u201d is hardly recommended either! The Rules of Golf now have a new Rule 25 for golfers with disabilities. The rule has existed since the last rule revision, but as a separate set of rules, and is most commonly used in pure Para golf tournaments. Now they are part of the Rules of Golf and apply to all tournaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A player who, under special rules, can prove that he has one of the functional disabilities referred to in Rule 25 is therefore allowed to use the possibilities in Rule 25 for his game in all contexts and is considered to be playing on an equal footing with other participants in the tournament in question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eligible players may include blind players, players with amputees, players in wheelchairs and players with developmental disabilities. According to the rule, these players may, for example, receive assistance from other people during the game, and the rules are relaxed in certain respects for golfers with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In connection with the revision of the Rules of Golf as of January 1, 2023, new editions of the Pocket Guide, the Rules of Golf (in English) and the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf (in English) have been published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pocket guide has been updated to match the new Rules, and the previous edition from 2019 must therefore be replaced.
