Den 27. maj var Københavns Golf Klub vært for The 2023 Open Danish Hickory Championship.
En flot dag og meget flotte og velkældte spillere.
Vi modtog denne flotte hilsen fra formand Chr. Juel fra The Danish Golf Historical Society
“Stor tak til alle hos KGK for en fantastisk dag, jeg har fået masser af positiv mails her til morgen, alle var super glade for banen, stemningen, maden og turnering.
Det var 10. gang vi afviklede turneringen og der var i alt 39 spillere til start fra 5 forskellige lande. Som sædvanligt jo flest fra Sverige, men også Norge, Tyskland, Schweitz og DK var repræsenteret.”
Hope you've enjoyed the beautiful May weather, where we've had significantly more sunshine than usual. The golf course still misses rain, but it's hard to be sad about the beautiful weather!
Restaurant
As you may have noticed, we have struggled to recruit new staff, especially for our kitchen. Our new restaurateur, Flemming Endres, along with Dres and Jakob, have put up a good fight throughout the start of the season.
We are therefore pleased to announce the appointment of a new head chef, Christina Holme Larsen, starting June 1. Christina brings a good portion of experience from similar positions and her love for good, solid Danish cuisine (including regional dishes) makes us look forward to the collaboration. Christina brings Line Plesner as a kitchen assistant / chef, who know each other from previous collaborations - so a strong team.
We look forward to welcoming them both to the restaurant team starting on Thursday.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Jakob S. Hermansen, who has been employed in our kitchen since 2019. Jakob will be leaving on May 31, 2023 at his own request. Good luck going forward.
Limited opening hours until 11.6.
Due to a lack of staff in the kitchen and restaurant, we have reduced opening hours as follows:
Monday to Thursday: 11:00-21:00
Friday to Sunday (and holidays): 10:00-17:00
The kitchen closes 30 minutes before. Remember to pre-order before you go out – THANK YOU!
From Monday 12.6. we will return to regular opening hours, open Monday-Thursday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM and Friday-Sunday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
We will continue to encourage you to purchase a value card to the restaurant, where you pay 1,000 DKK and get 1,100 DKK to buy food and drinks. The cards are purchased at the bar and can be refilled after the balance is used.
If you have feedback on the food or other good suggestions, please bring them directly to the restaurant. We welcome your feedback with open arms.

The spring is still very dry and we are waiting for the grass to grow. It won't come until we get a good rain. We water as much as our system allows us, but the areas not covered by sprinklers are suffering. A week of boring rain would do wonders for the course.
We have had a lot of witches' rings in recent years. First on our foregreens, then on some tees and now also on fairways. Witches' rings are a naturally occurring fungus that thrives in grass. There are different types of it, but the most harmful is the one we see on the course right now. The grass is scorched by large amounts of released nitrogen when the witches' rings slowly grow. Witches' rings are obvious when conditions are dry like we have on our course now. If we get a wet summer, the grass will be better able to fight back. We don't know if we will get that, but until then the greenkeepers will try to repair the damage to our foregreens. Last year we worked intensively on a number of foregreens plagued by witches' rings with some success. We will resume that work here in May.
As soon as the rain comes, we will be putting down a conditioner and fertilizer on the fairways. We have a denser turf on the fairways than we have in other springs and they are less damaged by deer. Divots from winter games are now a thing of the past because you have become so good at using mats throughout the winter. So our starting point for further lifting our fairways is better than compared to other years. Now it is just water that is the limiting factor. Perhaps long drought periods will become more common, but we are preparing by choosing more drought-resistant grass species when we reseed and the use of conditioner also helps the grass get the most out of the soil's water content. A dense turf as opposed to an open hole also helps reduce evaporation. Building up a dense turf is what the fertilizer helps with.
It may seem pointless to use divot bags on fairways when it is as dry as it is, but it is still a great help in creating smoother fairways and getting holes repaired as quickly as possible. I think the turnover rate of the hanging bags in the starter house is too low this year, so you must be more diligent here. Many thanks in advance.
We have a robot mower on trial. “Crille”, as it is called, has been introduced to several of you on the range. For about 2 months it will look after Louis' large teeing ground. After that we can evaluate whether it can manage to mow around dividers, signs and players and whether it can mow in tees and deer droppings. But the first trial period has been very positive and we greenkeepers are very excited. Now we also let Crille mow the short game area and maybe it is a little world news for the club. At least I have not heard of other places where they let a robot mow a newly established grass area.
There is a lot happening in the field of robotic lawnmowers for professional care these years and the solutions are becoming more and more attractive. They cut well, they have become “smarter” and more efficient and they are reliable. The climate account and the noise level are also pluses. STERF, the joint Nordic grass research fund, has started researching whether the grass becomes healthier and stronger when cut by small robots instead of large and heavy diesel machines. I see robots on golf courses as part of the future of golf courses. They will free up time for the greenkeepers to be able to focus on details instead of production. In particular, weeds, insect damage and diseases will take up a lot of the greenkeepers' time in the future as pesticides disappear. Perhaps they will disappear faster than we expect, as the EU Commission has come up with a bill for a general EU-wide ban on the use of pesticides on grass areas where people walk.
As written, the robot is being tested in our club. Although many clubs are in the process of acquiring robots, we are not sure whether they will fit into Dyrehaven and whether all the many rules we have to follow will even allow room for them. Time will tell.
The ban on the range has now finally been lifted. Poor Louis. Now his difficult time begins where his beloved range is being broken into pieces every day. It is a condition he must accept, but you can help him by practicing hitting your practice shots in lines instead of a scattered pattern. This will significantly reduce the wear and tear. Oskar and Klar are helpful in showing you the technique.
Cross your fingers for rain, remember to use your pitchfork and grab a divot bag for the trip.

Your second home Let's just say it: It's not a given that an association, run by volunteers, funded by its members, located in the middle of a protected park, at the mercy of weather, wind and 2000 grazing, playful deer, can reach its 125th anniversary. But we have done that in KGK, and we are in top shape. That's why we are happy and proud to invite every one of our members to join us in celebrating KGK for a week in August.
The celebration is for everyone. There will be tournaments of almost every kind. For those who want to get up early, for those who only want to play with ladies, gentlemen or only with young people, or only with their own partner, only with old clubs, only with beginners or don't want to play on the course at all, but like to putt. And all of course accompanied by fantastic prizes and lots of good food.
Because we really want you to take part in the party, even though we know that the community is changing.
And therein lies the point. Because we cannot sit back and enjoy what we have achieved, we must stay focused on how we survive the next 125 years with our souls intact.
Here you feel at home How do we make KGK your second home, as it has been for children and adults for generations, when KGK is so much in your genes that no matter when in life you return, this is where you feel at home? Because we have to face the fact that we have become less united as a club, and more find communities in those we know. That trend will only become clearer in the future, "me" rather than "us".
If the association is to survive, it is therefore so important that we remember to greet each other and that we respect each other on the course. That we use the restaurant, which now has more "rooms within the room" and that our tournaments are more targeted at those who want to play against and with each other. In the same way, we stick to the ball running times, because we get both a smooth process, life around the nice new training facilities and time to greet each other before we rush out to the 1st tee.
The track needs to be even better Once upon a time, the highest handicap was 36 strokes, and it was best not to go out on the course until you had learned the swing. But if we are to maintain membership, we must get used to the fact that some players will hit the first shot from the markings far out on the fairway, if that is what brings golf joy.
There is no doubt that the course is completely unique in its fantastic surroundings. But it is the game of golf that is at the center. Both members and guests expect a course in top shape, even though it must be able to withstand a lot, both from animals and people. For many years now, we have been yearning for close fairways and greens areas and uniform and even greens. We are still working hard on this and have brought in more talented people. The results are visible.
A more tangible challenge we see in the future is climate change, with the risk of both drought and too much water and the requirement to reduce CO2. That is why we are making plans for both a new irrigation system and geothermal heating at the driving range, if the authorities will give us permission.
In general, we are constantly taking stock of what we see coming. We play more in the mild winters, but since the grass doesn't grow back until spring, we have to accept the mats. We use all the new technology we can see that makes sense, we purchase new machines, we reach you on social media, offer a course guide on the App and have opened up Trackman games in the practice room.
We have to move. So the future is already here, and all that we sigh for when we read about “the good old days” is not something the board has abolished. It is simply the result of members coming and going and those who don’t move, go backwards. But at the same time, we must hold on to what makes KGK something very special, our second home.
While golfers are getting older and older and continuing to live active lives, we can be happy that KGK has one of Denmark's largest junior departments. This is where our future lies. This is where talents grow, and this is also where the seeds of lifelong love are planted.
A love that does not only apply to the game of golf, but is a love for Copenhagen Golf Club for 125 years. The love that makes us still exist and will continue to do so for the next 125 years.
Congratulations. May you all have a fantastic golf anniversary year.
