Life at the KGK Old Boys Club in December 2023.

Winter Jan 2024

During this time and in future winters, we may risk the course being closed due to the weather, and that is good for the condition of the course when the season starts – but it is disappointing not to be able to play when you have set aside time for it.

The chairman has therefore spoken to the owner of Simgolf at Bellahøj about the possibility of playing indoor golf. Many have probably never tried it and others play golf there every week throughout the winter months.

To give everyone the chance to try it out and see if it might be something they would consider in the future, we have made an agreement for a trial round in January, exclusively for the Old Boys Club.

If it's something that turns out to be of great interest, maybe next winter we could play indoors every Friday morning?

There are still quite a few who have not paid their dues for 2024 – we hope it is because they only pay at the last minute 🙂

Merry Christmas

The board wishes everyone and their families a very Merry Christmas.

The next infomail will be sent around January 8th with a status on the number of paying members and publication of the 2024 Annual Plan.

Status of quota payments

As of today, December 20th, we have received a total of 64 payments and we hope that payments will flood in between Christmas and New Year's before the deadline expires on December 31st.

In collaboration with Simgolf, Hvidkildevej 64, 2400 At Copenhagen NV we have the great pleasure of inviting you to a round of golf no matter how much it rains or snows outside.

We have chosen to play the Great Northern course at Kerteminde – and we meet for breakfast at 08:00 and plays from 09:00-12:00 in 3-ball.

Green fee including breakfast is only 175 DKK. You play with your own equipment or you can rent/borrow a set from Simgolf.

We already have 2 Old Boys members (Niels Walløe and Niels Kofoed) who play regularly every week in Simgolf during the winter months and Niels will be helpful on the day.

Registration to the chairman no later than Monday, January 15th with payment of DKK 175 via MobilePay to 21644616.

Old Boys to Mallorca in October 2024

The interest in coming to Mallorca was overwhelming – it took less than 30 hours from the time the invitation was sent out until 16 places were sold and we ended up with 18 participants.

Thank you very much for your interest and support for the chairman's proposal for the 2024 golf trip!

With 18 participants, we have asked for 6 x 3-balls, which has been rejected by the courses - so it will be 4 x 4-balls + a 2-ball, which will probably include 2 unknown players in the ball, unless Hans Henning Jensen, who is already in Mallorca, books himself in the ball as well or we get one more participant on the trip.

If anyone still regrets not being able to register, please contact the chairman as soon as possible.

A Grand Old Man Says Goodbye

I have enjoyed my membership in KGK's Old Boys club for many years. But age is starting to bother me, and I think I am gradually going too slowly to expose my teammates to my pace. I have therefore decided to terminate my membership in the Old Boys club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the many good hours on the field and in the club, which are largely thanks to your commitment.

We wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a good and healthy 2024.

Best regards

Jan S Hummer

Birthdays

Steen Mahneke will celebrate his 75th birthday on January 2nd.

Soon the end of long drives 🙂

Officially (article in Golf.dk): The golf ball will fly shorter from 2030 (probably mostly for elite players, the rest of us probably won't experience any major difference 😊)

Golf regulators have announced new rules. Golf balls are no longer allowed to fly as far as they do now.

From 2030, we will all be playing with balls that cannot fly as far as the current ones.

For elite players, the new rules will come into effect from January 2028, i.e. in four years.

This is the announcement on Wednesday, December 6th, from the R&A and USGA, which jointly set the laws and regulations for the sport of golf on a global level.

The decision was expected, and comes after years of debate. A debate that has arisen because the world's top men's players are hitting longer and longer shots. This has made prestigious course designs obsolete and made elite golf a more space-intensive sport, which does not harmonize well with the desire to move in a sustainable direction.

“We believe this decision is one of the most important ways to achieve a sustainable future for golf. We are protecting the integrity of the game and delivering on our environmental commitments,” said Martin Slumbers, chief executive of the R&A.

The two regulatory bodies estimate that the decision will cost the longest hitters (people like Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy) 12 to 14 meters on the drive. The average men's tour player will lose 8-10 meters, while a player on the LPGA Tour or Ladies European Tour will lose around six meters. The club golfer will lose 4.5 meters or less with the driver, according to the R&A and USGA.

– The steps we have taken have minimal impact on the recreational golfer. We are acting now because we want future generations to have the opportunity to enjoy the unique challenges of golf as much as we do, says Martin Slumbers.

As it stands today, a ball is legal if it does not travel more than 317 yards (289.8648 meters, red) when hit with a clubhead speed of 120 miles per hour with a spin rate of 2520 rpm and a launch angle of 10 degrees. When the new rules go into effect, balls will be tested with a clubhead speed of 125 miles per hour with a spin rate of 2220 rpm and a launch angle of 11 degrees. The ball is still only allowed to travel 317 yards.

“Thousands will say we’ve gone too far. But just as many will say we haven’t done enough to protect the game in the long term,” said Mike Whan, executive director of the USGA. His statement encapsulates the polarizing nature of the debate over ball characteristics.

Many voices in the sport, including prominent pros like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, have lamented for years that developments have reduced elite golf to a game of long drives, where players hit wedges into almost every green and thus do not have to master as many different shots as previous generations of top players had to.

It eliminates many of the strategic elements on courses. Bunkers and lakes become irrelevant when players effortlessly hit over them from the tee, and many championship courses have done everything they could and more to find more space for new teeing grounds that could make holes longer.

Conversely, there are plenty of both professionals and amateurs who, for understandable reasons, are not happy about the idea of losing length from the tee and then having to hit a longer iron towards the green.

The R&A and USGA have previously proposed that elite players should play with one type of ball, while we weekend lucky knights could continue with the current ones. However, that idea was shot down, as many want to stick to the same rules for everyone who plays the sport, regardless of whether you are number one in the world or number shock in the local Whitsun tournament. Previous statements from the R&A and USGA have been proposals that have been the subject of debate and consultations.

Today's (December 6) announcement is a final decision.
