Life in the KGK Old Boys Club in June 2023.

RoyalCopenhagen_04Aerial08_0617

A busy month is over and a quiet month is ahead of us and even though many are on vacation, we are still playing every Friday in July. If we don't get that many, we will probably do Running Starts.

We have already decided to invite you to the traditional match with the Tuesday Club in August – see attached invitation. We have succeeded again, again, in getting WEALTH MANAGEMENT as a lunch sponsor and Rosé, Wine & Bubbles as a prize sponsor. We thank both sponsors many times for their great contributions!

Please notethat the Office has probably not had time to create the match in GolfBox, but it will happen no later than Monday.

We wish all members a wonderful July with the hope for continued good weather and we look forward to another busy month in August.

KGK's 125th Anniversary – Old Boys Match – Friday, August 18

Registration for this special match is now open and if you are wondering why our match is also open to ladies and juniors, it is because we have been told all along by KGK that all matches in The anniversary week was for all members of KGKWe have now found that this does not apply to, for example, the Tuesday Club, where the match is exclusively for women, now that the program has been sent out and registrations have opened.

However, we are maintaining our match format and can now also inform you that the advertised green fee (which will only cover lunch + small drink) of 125 DKK, by KGK has been changed to 98 DKK. We thank you for that 🙂

Old Boys encourages as many of you to sign up – either for 9 or 18 holes – and to invite your 'better half' to the club, because after the match at approx. 15:00 we have provided music on the terrace, as The Flying Moments will come and play and there will also be a Food Truck! On the putting green there will also be a putting competition and we are also working on getting a tasting of some kind – probably from Holger Frederiksen on Ordrupvej – and we are also working on handing out extra drink vouchers to those members of Old Boys who want to join in the fun.

If you haven't registered yet, make sure to do so and make sure your "better half" is registered too.

KGK has chosen that all award ceremonies for all matches during the week, takes place on Saturday, August 19th.

June 2

The first "Klappepræmiæt", where all 3 ranks participated, took place this Friday and the talented winners of the match were:

A-row: Niels Walløe

B-row: Lars Høhne

C-row: Theis Jensen

– and the talented winners of red wines were:

A-row: Erik Schreiner + Ulrik Andersen-Alstrup + Arve Sund

B-row: Poul Hansen + Kersi Porbunderwalla + Finn Skovgård

C-row: Jan Schultz + Anders Scheuer Nielsen + The Chairman 🙂

June 9 – Friendly match with Hornbæk

This year's prize table

“Wonderful weather and great golf experiences” – could be the headline for this day – but after the big defeat last year of 2-13, today’s headline must be:

WE WON THE MATCH OF THE YEAR – convincingly, too, with a score of 8.5-6.5 😊

THANK YOU to everyone for your great contributions – nice that the trophy can once again find its place in KGK's prize cabinet.

We played with the lowest handicap reset in the balls and after some confusion in the morning, things went smoothly as we got around the course – but even after the round there were several Hornbæk and KGK players who were in favor of not resetting the match. We will have to wait until next year to see what format Hornbæk chooses. Next year the match will be played on Friday, June 7th.

The award for best KGK team went to Poul Birch and Carsten Buhl Trosborg – who won 6/5 – congratulations to both of you. If you're wondering why two gentlemen played together, it's because Carsten stepped in as a reserve at the last minute.

When I initially write about “great golf experiences”, it covers the ball the chairman played in, where the lady from Hornbæk made a Eagle on Hole 2 – and the gentleman holed his approach on Hole 11 for a Birdie, which was the direct reason why the chairman did not win his ball (we were sure 😊). If he had not done so, Hornbæk would have been 2 down after Hole 11 instead of All Square 🙁 – that's how it can happen sometimes.

The chairman also learned that you are no longer obliged to correct your scorecard, even if you have played a round the day before and, for example, made 44 points, as the Hornbæk lady in the chairman's ball had done - because previously you could easily calculate your new handicap - it is immediately more difficult when it is the best 8 rounds of the last 20 played, so you cannot immediately calculate the new hdc yourself. Instead, it is the Match Director's responsibility to ensure that all scorecards are correct - but they were already printed out on Thursday morning - that is, before the Hornbæk ladies played their match. But then we will know for another good time.

June 16 – 3rd round of the Tee Championship from tee 52

Fantastic golfing weather – warm and almost no wind – and it resulted in very good scores. The winner of the match was Michael Gerlif with a whopping 43 points – Michael’s best round of the year – and with 11 x par we can congratulate Michael on his new handicap of 15.4! 2nd place went to Jørgen Ib Hansen with 40 points ahead of Jens Frederik Hansen with 39.

With 3 of 5 divisions completed, the current status – without deducting the worst round – is:

Michael Gerlif 107 points

Erik Fabrin 105 points

Poul Hansen 103 points

Lars Høhne 101 points

Niels Walløe 96 points

The office again had great difficulty deciphering the 9-hole scorecards. Several scorecards actually had a lower score than was noted on the scorecard!

The office is very excited about us introducing Live Scoring permanently so that the problems are eliminated.

The winner of the C-series was Henrik Pedersen with 21 points ahead of Poul Birch and with Finn Skovgård in 3rd place.

June 23 – Gift card match with prizes from Magasin du Nord

Great golfing weather – warm and almost no wind – for the third Friday in a row – although the scores didn't quite reach the same level as the week before.

In the A-rank, Jens Frederik Hansen and Arve Sund each went home happier with a gift certificate of 250 DKK for a round in 41 and 38 points respectively and with Ib Jacobsen in 3rd place with 36 points.

In the B-row, Lars Høhne ran with the gift card in 39 points ahead of Arne Bierfreund with 34 and Theis Jensen with 33 points.

The C-series was won by Henrik Pedersen with a whopping 21 points, but after Henrik had achieved second place + 2 first places the last 3 times, the prize went to number 2, which was Anders Scheuer Nielsen, who scored 16 points. Congratulations to all winners.

We had Live Scoring again and it was great to hear after the match that more and more people are starting to like the new form of score registration – at least it was great for the match director that the overall result was available after 4 hours of play and before the last ball had come in 🙂

June 30

On the last Friday in June we played Modified Stroke Play + 4-7-9 in all 3 rows.

Again, the match management had chosen Live Scoring, this time to test how it works when playing a format other than Stableford – the skilled winners were:

A-row: Niels Walløe ahead of Christian Strandgaard and Poul Birch

B-row: Kersi Porbunderwalla ahead of Theis Jensen and Ditlev Bondesen

C-row: Anders Scheuer Nielsen in front of the chairman and Finn Skovgård

– and the talented winners of red wines were:

A-row: Michael Gerlif, Ulrik The Eagle Andersen-Alstrup, Jørgen Ib Hansen

B-row: Christian Geisler, Steen Mahneke,

C-row: Søren Juhl Hansen, Erik Hamre and Mikael Thorsen (Mikael had left when the prizes were awarded, so thanks to Mikael for his contribution to the wine cabinet)

The position in OOM as of July 1

A-rank: Michael Gerlif with 14 points + Niels Walløe with 12 points and Ib Jacobsen with 11 points

B-row: Steen Mahneke with 15 points + Kersi Porbunderwalla with 13 and Lars Høhne with 12 points

C-row: Henrik Pedersen with 26 points + Jan Schultz with 13 and Erik Hamre/Anders Scheuer both with 10 points

New members

KGK member 1-224 Lars Henrichsen, 1-111 Peter Hoverby and 1-2659 Mads Laustsen are all new members of the Old Boys Club.

We warmly welcome them all and look forward to playing with them.

With these 3 new members, we are now up to 13 new members this year and 106 in total.

Lund + Spain

We have gained several new members, which is why we have chosen once again to advertise our excursion to Lund in Sweden in September and Spain in October, where we still have 1 place left in a single room.

Birthday:

Member 1-2023 David Rubin will celebrate his 65th birthday on July 3rd.

Danish Golf Magazine – June 2023 – No. 3

In this edition you can read the following about rules: Too early start – Most players probably know that there is a penalty for being late for your starting time – but few know that it is just as punishable to start too early! Some players believe that it is perfectly fine to start before the set time. This applies to both running starts and gun starts.

Many people think that they can just as well start a few minutes before the specified time at a gun start, when they are standing and waiting anyway, and there is room on the hole – or that they can just tee off when the team in front is out of reach, even though the specified starting interval has not yet passed. But that's not allowed!

If you start too early, there is a much greater risk of catching up with the group ahead, with possible irritation for both them and your own group. So you might as well wait at the tee time and ensure better flow on the pitch. The penalty for starting too early is the same as being late! 0-5 minutes results in a 2-stroke penalty on the first hole of the round (when playing Stableford), and more than 5 minutes results in a disqualification!

By the way, there is an article about our lovely course on the last pages of the Magazine – under the heading: THE CROWN JEWEL

St Andrews – and surrounding area

The last days of May were spent by 4 Old Boys on a small private golf trip to the St. Andrews area in Scotland.

They didn't make it to the Old Course this time, but 3 lovely courses around St. Andrews were played in lovely golfing weather.

The editor thinks it's great that our club within the club can generate friendships and that it can result in golf trips together and is looking forward to participating in the next trip to Emporda and PGA Catalunya in Spain in October.

Michael Laursen

Apparently, being in Scotland has taken a toll on Michael, as he has been asking for time off from Old Boys for almost 2 months!

We wish Michael a very good trip to Canada :-).

Golf uphill!

Our 9-hole manager on the board, Erik Hamre, has been to Switzerland and played golf in Verbier –  https://www.verbiergolfclub.ch – and sent this description:

"Awesome course, but also challenging. Breathing is different when the air is so thin. If you stress it becomes difficult."

(Editor: Probably not a course to play too crookedly on 😊)

If you have a fun/exciting golf experience yourself, send it to the editor - preferably with a photo.

July

The month offers 3 x Stableford + one Modified Stroke Play with Running Start. To make everyone even more familiar with Live Scoring, wouldn't it surprise the editor if it was introduced in all the matches?

The chairman will be absent on July 14th as he is co-organizer of the DK CHAMPIONNAT DU MONDE INTERNATIONAL DE BOULE 2023 in France on July 11th.

Play well – remember sunscreen – also on your ears!

Kind regards

The Board of Directors of Old Boys
