Annual report 2016

By Erik Peitersen and Martin Nilsson

Since the first mole was caught on September 21, 2008, a total of 575 have been caught on our trail to date (December 30, 2016).

The number has been declining in recent years due to overfishing, and in 2016 only 25 were caught. The maximum was 125 in 2011.

There have been no breeding moles on the field for the last two years.

The course is “protected” by a lake and two paved roads, so “intruders” come mainly from the north side, the forest holes, and constitute 85 % of the catch. Approximately 80 % are young, i.e. born in the calendar year. Then the moles look for areas where they can form territories. So far so good, but a systematic and strategic effort must continue to be made so that the moles do not establish themselves on the course again. If this happens, you have to start over.

The effort consists of frequent inspection of the field, several times a week, and setting traps as soon as new shoots are observed.

Over the course of a year, many hours are spent on this, especially in the autumn, when this year's fry emerge.

Thank you

Martin & Erik
