Team tournament, National Final U16A. September 29th

Næstved provided great weather and a great pitch for the end of the season for the boys' team, who in the national finals would meet the champions in Vest from Trehøje, who were also the defending Danish champions from 2023 – which their T-shirts bore the imprint of. Undeniably a tough opponent for the boys. There was good support from almost the entire KGK team in Næstved, and it really was a highly dramatic final.

The day unfortunately started off badly when a Trehøje player sprained his knee during warm-ups and had to withdraw from the first single in great pain. A boring way for KGK to get ahead early, and 2-0 is a dangerous lead, as we know.

KGK's second single started nervously from shore and had to play the first hole. However, it was already equalized on the second hole with a birdie, and then everything was set for a match that will be remembered for a long time on both sides of the Great Belt - dare we say it. KGK came 3 up at the turn, where the difficult greens decided most holes in KGK's favor based on a scorching putter and several "birdies" for the account. Their sent-out therefore concentrated for a while on the foursome in the relative certainty of a safe lead to the single. The foursome was in difficulty throughout the morning, and support was needed. On the 9th, Trehøje, on the other hand, had difficulties around the difficult green. It seemed that KGK could get back into the match and equalize with A/S. Hole-in-one is a tricky thing when you smell an advantage. Where there was a prospect of equalization, it instead turned out to be a KGK rubber arm and 2 down!

It seemed as if nothing would go the foursome's way, so the concentration had to return to the single, which could actually decide matters. The three holes 10-11-12 had almost become match-deciding in the single, both on paper and mentally. Trehøje fought back superbly in a very well-played match. On the 12th, Trehøje even had a 1-meter putt to equalize the match! However, it was missed and the KGK single brought the match back to 2 up shortly after, and calm was able to return a little. This lead held until dormy 2 up. The 17th hole had to be nervously surrendered on a nice birdie to Trehøje. The match had to go down the difficult 18th hole with water on the right and out-of-bounds on the left along the entire hole. A tied hole would give KGK the overall victory. Trehøje hits a tree from the tee, but the ball is playable. The pulse rose when KGK's drive landed a few meters from the penalty area on the right. There was safe play on the green from both sides in regulation. The putt was to decide it again. KGK leads with an aggressive putt for the victory to a 1m return downhill. The Trehøje player's putt is directed towards the hole, but hits an unevenness to stop just short – wow, almost back-to-back birdies! KGK then putts for the overall victory. The club that has effectively ensured KGK's presence in the match all day becomes decisive again. This time the putt sneaks around via the edge of the hole, and Trehøje has vitally equalized the single. The overall match is now not decided – but completely open. A completely crazy development.

The foursome gets three down early on the back, but fights back exemplary on A/S, only to have to give up a single hole again before 17. Both teams are on the 17th green in two – but without threatening the hole. KGK far from the hole and Trehøje with a medium-long downhill putt. Then two things happen that should not happen on such a day and at such a time. The rubber arm returns to KGK. After which Trehøje moves the ball after addressing. A longer rules situation arises, which could potentially decide the hole and the match. In the end, it does not matter for the outcome. Trehøje manages to gather itself and win the 17th for a narrow 2-1 victory and thus the overall victory 4-3. Fortunately, one is tempted to say. Because if there is one thing KGK does not want, it is to win on a rules decision inside the clubhouse. It is thought-provoking, however, how easily one might go wrong, especially in match play.

It's not fun to lose, and it's certainly not easy to lose like that. On the other hand, it's with a feeling of pride from everyone around the team that KGK's boys give the reigning Danish champions a fight to the finish and actually lose honorably by – yes, only one measly stroke after a whole season of golf. The hours after the defeat were not easy for KGK's deeply disappointed boys. With a great 2nd place nationally, there is more than usual good reason to congratulate the boys on a formidable effort in every way. The level has been raised all the way, culminating on the final day. We hope that the boys will soon see how great their performance really is, that their chests can be pushed forward and their self-confidence will return. It's close at the top; very close – but the boys had the skill to be there. A chance can feel wasted. But it is only the first of many chances, and a valuable experience has been gained. We look forward to 2025 with butterflies in our stomachs! BIG CONGRATULATIONS ON THE SILVER MEDALS BOYS – SUPER GREAT COMPETITION!

Junior regional final, Team tournament, U16A series, Korsør 22/9-24

Here follows the report on the results of the regional finals in DGU's Team Tournament 2024. It was a lovely, calm and sunny late summer Sunday for KGK's juniors on Korsør's lovely course.

Semi-final. KGK girls vs. KGK boys

Finally, the morning arrived, when KGK's two junior teams would face each other in the semi-finals for a place in the regional finals. There had been a lot of talk in the past about the gender battle – the girls' team against the boys' team. The match was played at a great level with a fresh approach but with great respect – kudos to all the participants! Both teams fielded a largely full and well-trained team, and the team captains were left wondering about the team setup in the two matches, as all participants naturally had to compete. The girls started off strong and won the first single 4-2. It didn't take long, however, before the boys responded by winning the next single in exactly the same numbers. Then it was down to the foursome to finally decide the match. The boys were up for most of the match, but couldn't really shake off the girls. On the penultimate hole, the final decision came when the boys managed to hole a long putt for a singles victory 2-1 and 5-2 overall. In that calculation, there are actually very few differences!

The bronze medal match. KGK girls against Søllerød

The afternoon began with the girls' battle for bronze medals. The two singles were heavily contested by two long-hitting Søllerød boys with low handicaps. On paper, tough opponents and nervousness set in on both the player and captain side. It seemed that Søllerød would decide matters quickly. But it's a game of holes. Despite the odds, the girls quickly settled down heavily in all three matches. The first single settled things on the iconic par-3 hole 16th to 3-2. The second single also settled it 4-2 on the same hole after a trip to Søllerød in the water. And by then the medals were effectively already secured. In the end, the foursome was dormy 3 up and could relax. It was cosmetic that Søllerød fought their way (beautifully!) back to A/S. Great way the girls managed to get up and put their anxiety to shame in the battle for bronze. And from this, everyone can learn that it is not handicap and length that decide matters. There are so many other facets to golf. BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GIRLS ON A WONDERFUL AND DESERVED BRONZE MEDAL!

The gold medal match. KGK boys against Korsør

In the final, the boys were to play against the home favourites from Korsør, who had cruised into the final in the morning. It was of course nail-bitingly exciting. Korsør started off with a relatively quick 1st single 3-2 on – again – the 16th hole – a popular closing hole that separated the sheep from the goats throughout the day. But in the last two matches, the KGK boys had a good grip on their opponents from the start – without being able to pull away decisively. In the second single, there was a short putt to win the hole and match on the 16th green. But the nerves started to show, and it was a hole-in-one (that should have been marked and patiently awaited). KGK did come dormy to up, but the match had to go down the 17th hole. KGK led with a thunderous shot down the fairway in position A1. The Korsør boy felt the pressure and dodged his drive, and KGK was thus awarded the advantage. The Korsør boy then cannoned an all-or-nothing full 3rd wood near the green. The advantage disappeared when the KGK second shot hit the tree before the green to lie short of the green. In the meantime, the foursome was resolved in KGK's favor with an ultimately fairly safe 3-2 victory (16th hole again again), and everyone therefore crowded together at the 17th green. Then it was up to the play and putt in the 2nd single if the match was to go down to 18 holes and potentially in sudden-death. A nervous play and first putt gave a dangerous 3m for bogey to KGK. Similarly, the Korsør boy made two safe putts for the same bogey and waited patiently for the outcome. This time there was really no hesitation either. The 3m putt was sunk after an ultra-short reflection period, and the jubilant scenes were allowed to break out with 5-2 overall to KGK. The gold medals were deservedly secured on the basis of the broad squad, good camaraderie and of course incredibly good play especially in the crucial pressure situations. A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO THE KGK BOYS WITH THE GOLD MEDAL IN THE REGIONAL FINAL. But the adventure actually doesn't end here. On September 28th, the boys will have the opportunity for one last ultimate honor in the national final against the corresponding champions in the west from Trehøje on Næstved's sea-side course. And why not go all the way; there is plenty of faith that it will happen! more to follow…

From everyone in the Junior Committee, Coaches and Team Captains, a big thank you must already go out to the young people for a very great sporting season and not least for the great playing spirit, camaraderie and good respectful competition throughout the season - maintained with a bit of fun and banter in between. 😉 We are looking forward to next year, when even more teams and constellations can come into play due to the development this year, which has truly been incredible. It should turn out to be the moral finale, when the KGK teams met each other in the regional final, and KGK came away with maximum benefit from it. It simply doesn't get better. Super well done to everyone!

The junior boys' team has now been in the final action in the team tournament for U16A East. Before the summer break, the boys' team effectively put an end to the spring season/qualification by beating the other top team, Asserbo, in a quality match away from home. When Asserbo even stumbled in their penultimate pool match, it ended with a convincing pool win for the boys. Therefore, on August 29, in +30 degrees, the trip went to a neutral court in Greve to play a play-off match against Hjortespring for qualification to the regional final in Korsør on September 22. It was a nerve-wracking day for KGK's players! The breadth of the team has made the difference in KGK's favor throughout the spring, and it was again today. KGK finally won a close match 5-2 after a single went their way. The foursome match was a back-and-forth affair. But a near hole-in-one from KGK (2 cm) and a little blunder by the opponent meant a victory on the last hole in the foursome for KGK.

The boys have generally found the decisive shots at the right and important times. Strong in the memory is an eagle on the last hole from about 70m to hammer the last nail in the coffin in a home match against Hillerød, where exactly that was needed to win. So the quality has been very high! Thus, the boys deservedly qualified - if the match program is to be believed - to meet KGK's girls' team in the regional semi-final on Korsør's lovely course. That means out of 27 competing teams in the East, two out of four teams from KGK are in the regional finals - pretty well done in our opinion! That's both good and bad. Good, because a KGK team is guaranteed in the regional final itself and thus "metal" for KGK. Bad, because our two teams do not meet each other in the regional final itself. The team captains also have gray hairs on their heads, because teams have to be selected for both the semi-finals and the final/3rd place match, but there are so many deserving and talented players available. Luxury problems are also problems. However, the trenches have started to be dug for the genders' internal KGK match 😉

Junior Team Tournament 2024

June update on the Junior Team Tournament (JHT) for U16.

We can already note a great success with this year's JHT. Throughout the spring season, the juniors have shown great enthusiasm and team spirit around JHT. It is a pleasure to see how they enjoy themselves together in the teams and with their opponents. And there is even a queue to be in the team matches; the team captains have had to be tough in the rotation principles. The breadth of the boys' team in particular has impressed. We expect to have to field more teams next season in JHT.

It has also been a great spring season in terms of sports. After last year's close-and-near for both teams, this year we have turned up the winning mentality.

After an early defeat to Smørum, the girls' team has not looked back. Even before the last round match at home against Kokkedal on June 6, the girls have won their opening group by the best mutual match against the second top team in the group, Dragør. It was thus cosmetic that the girls narrowly lost to Kokkedal 4-3 in the last match, after having been ahead for large periods. But with a strong final sprint, Kokkedal won. You can't win every time, but the girls drew the longest straw in the vast majority of close matches throughout the season and therefore deserved to continue in the tournament.

The girls are directly qualified for the playoffs in Korsør on September 22, as the girls avoid a play-off match in Division U16A East. Congratulations to the girls!

Throughout the season, the girls' team has consisted of Cecilie Brandt Krenk, Signe Widlund, Ella Vittrup-Bertheussen, Antonia Noye Ostenfeld and Sofia von Holstein.

The boys' team has started extremely strongly with four wins out of four possible. The boys have therefore taken a clear lead in the pool early on and have given themselves a number of match points in settling matters and following the girls through the tournament as pool winners. The match at home on June 6 against the other possible top team, Asserbo, was the first match point, but it unfortunately became the first lost match of the campaign. The boys therefore have an exciting end to June. There are still good opportunities for advancement. This requires at least one point in the last match against Asserbo away, or for Asserbo to add points in their last match.

We're keeping our fingers crossed for the boys' team!

Throughout the season, the boys' team has consisted of Conrad von Holstein, Victor Holstein Arnesen, Frederik Hove-Andersen, Philip Tiger Hamilton, Piet Saunte, Samuel Ring, Theodore McGregor and Johannes Noye Ostenfeld.

It has been impossible to get all the participants together for a photo, so we have to bet that will happen in Korsør in September 😉 A selection of the teams can be seen in the pictures above.

Well fought by KGK's super cool juniors.
